Five Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

Sun 28 Jul 2013

It’s easy to underestimate the importance of your tyres. Easy, that is, until they become unusable due to damage, or an unsafe tyre bursts while you’re driving at 70 miles an hour with your family in the car. It sounds like a worst case scenario, but of all the things that can go wrong with your car, losing a tyre while on the road is one of the most dangerous.

To keep your car in working order, keep an eye out for these five signs that your tyres might need replacing.

Tread Depth
The tread depth on your car needs to be at least 1.6mm. When your tyres begin to look smooth and the tread shallow, it means your car will lose traction. It can easily slide on wet surfaces, and when left unchecked you can wear the tyre down to its threading.

Visible Damage
As the point of contact between a heavy car and the hard road, tyres take quite a pounding. Pavement edges, rocks or other objects on the road can force air out, or cause visible tears. If this happens, you need to get the tyres checked by a professional to determine the extent of the damage, and whether they need replacing.

Deflation
If you find yourself repeatedly at the air pump, wondering why your tyres just aren’t what they used to be, it’s probably because they’re past their best and either in need of repair or replacement. This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a puncture, but over time valves can weaken and the mounting surface of the wheel can become damaged by road chemicals or hitting pavements and potholes.

Bulges and Blisters
The outer surface of the tyre can also weaken, causing the material to lose its rigidity and start to balloon outwards. When this happens, it’s only a short amount of time before the blister bursts and the inner tube is exposed. In this case, the tyre needs immediate replacement before it blows out.

Excessive Vibration
Often caused by misaligned wheels or poor suspension, an increase in vibration can also indicate a problem with the tyre itself. Whatever the cause, it’s best to take the car for a check-up.
